James Bruce Chalfant, 66, beloved husband, father,
grandfather
Morristown,
NJ – James “Bruce” Chalfant died Thursday,
February 22 at Morristown Memorial
Hospital. Bruce was born in McKeesport,
Pennsylvania on March 30, 1940, and moved to Morristown,
NJ at the age of ten. After attending Morristown
and Hanover Park High
School, he graduated Lehigh
University in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania in 1962. During his tenure at Lehigh University Bruce
was a disc jockey at a local radio station, and was the head of the percussion
section for the University Band.
Following graduation from Lehigh, Bruce joined the United States Air
Force, as a commissioned officer and distinguished graduate Bruce served at
several Air Forces bases including Whiteman AFB – Strategic Air Command, as the
Base Information Officer. Later Bruce
was one of the 1st First Lieutenants in the Air Forces Minuteman
missile program, and served as a Combat Crew Chief, and a Senior Instructor – Missile
Combat Crew Commander. He also found time to be part of the OTS Drum and Bugle
Corps. Following his military service
Bruce began a career in journalism, where he initially reported on global oil
markets for National Petroleum and Platt’s Oilgram. He traveled on ice breaking tanker the s.s. Manhattan
during the Northwest Passage for the building of the
Alaskan Pipeline. Bruce launched the daily telex service on global spot markets
for McGraw Hill. During his career he
not only covered the spot markets in Europe and the Gulf Coast during the Arab
Oil Embargo and the oil shortage as well he directed coverage of the Iran/Iraq
war and the Iraq invasion of Kuwait and the collapse of the Junk Bond
Market. His journalistic career path led
him to create the Energy Service for Dow Jones/Telerate where he was the editor
in Chief of the Dow Jones/Telerate Financial information newsroom. His experience and insight proved valuable to
the financial industry. He retired in
2002. In his spare time Bruce loved drumming
and music.
As a loving husband, father, and
grandfather he is survived by his wife of 44 years Gail Sanderson Chalfant; his
two daughters Gabrielle Elizabeth Meyer, and Heather Ann Maher; and three
grandchildren Richard James Chalfant Meyer, Daniel James Maher, and Isabelle
Leah Maher. To those who knew him, he
was a special person, and a good friend – he will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will be held at
St. Peters Episcopal Church, corner of Miller and South Streets, Morristown,
NJ at 10:00
am on Tuesday, February
27, 2007. Visiting will be
on Monday, February 26, 2007,
from 2:00 – 4:00pm and 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Rowe Lanterman Funeral
