In Memoriam: MKL Resident Charlie Duffy (1933-2023)

Charles M. Duffy Jr. beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on May 16th. 2023.  The eldest of three, he was born on September 20, 1933 in Newark New Jersey to Charles M. Duffy and Josephine Zwigard.  Affectionately known as Charlie, he grew up in Millburn and Short Hills where he attended St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark and then continued his studies at Georgetown University. After serving in the Army in Germany, he met the love of his life, Helen Orange, at the Parker House in Spring Lake and they were married in 1962. Charles worked alongside his father Charles and brother John in the family business John Duffy Fuel Company in Newark and T F Barry Oil Service in Berkeley Heights. Charlie and Helen raised 4 children in Maplewood before moving to New Vernon New Jersey. He loved the ocean and spent summers fishing, swimming and waterskiing with his children on Nantucket. As an active member of the Church of Christ the King, Charlie continued his life of service helping with Eve’s Kitchen, making home improvements with the parish teenagers in Appalachia and as a member of the church choir.  After retiring Charlie and Helen owned and operated Hooray for Toys in Berkeley Heights for 12 years. He was well loved and will be remembered for his wonderful smile and infectious humor. He was a true treasure and will be sorely missed.
 
Charlie is predeceased by his parents, wife Helen and daughter Claire.  He is survived by his sister Phyllis Stanley, and his children Jeanne McCabe (Brian), Charlie III, and Liz Duffy (Judd) and his grandchildren Colin, Tim, Caroline and Liam to whom he was affectionately known as Pop as well as  numerous nieces and nephews
 
Viewing will be at Doyle Funeral Home 106 Maple Ave Morristown Friday 5/19 4-7pm. Mass of Christian burial 11 am Saturday 5/20 at The Church of Christ the King 16 Blue Mill Road New Vernon, NJ
