Instructions for VSA Volunteers

The VSAs are a group of volunteers who monitor our water system daily.  Their contribution is invaluable and new volunteers are ALWAYS WELCOME! See VSA Schedule for more details.

  • If anyone will not be available for the week on the schedule that is assigned to her or his name, she or he should try and find a replacement for that time, maybe trading off with someone who will be there when  she or he will not. Failing a tradeoff or other
arrangement please get in touch with  VSA Organizer so he will know there is a problem and can make alternate arrangements to cover the spot. For last minute “whoops events” call VSA Organizer,  and leave a message if he is not there.
  • Please continue to make readings until the next VSA confirms to you that he or she is ready to take over. Leaving a message that receives no response may mean that the next VSA is out of town.
  • Please call the next VSA near the beginning of your week so there is time to find a replacement if needed.
  • If you notice any deviations or problems with the water system, please call  our licensed operator, Agra Environmental & Laboratory Services first.  Their phone number is 973-989-0010.  VSA Organizer, Ken Heiden (973-425-0875) is also available for questions.
  • An example of a problem might be that a chlorinating pump is not ticking away while the water pump is in operation. It is possible for a pump to lose prime or even to fail, allowing water that is not chlorinated to be sent into the system, and, while this is not
necessarily a major problem (as we have not had any contamination events), it is possible for there to be contamination, which is why we are doing this in the first place (as well as fulfilling a state mandated requirement). Another example of a problem might be low or high amounts of water being pumped, which could indicate a developing problem – either a bad pump or controller (low), or a leak in the
    system (high).
  • Both Mike and Max are familiar with the operation of the Lakeshore water system.  Mike’s cell phone is 201-841-1075 .
  • If you are unable to talk directly to someone at Agra, please leave a message with them and try to contact VSA Organizer, leaving a message for non urgent problems.

Many thanks again to all of you for your important and continuing contribution to our community.
